The history: Galveston was the richest city in Texas before the 1900 hurricane, and after the Seawall was built the Galvez was the island's statement that it would return as a resort. Its guest book through the twentieth century reads like a national directory, and its wartime years and later decline and revival add layers to the lore. The 1900 Storm remains the deadliest natural disaster in American history, and that grief runs through every Galveston ghost story. Franklin D. Roosevelt stayed in 1937, and later guests included Dwight Eisenhower and Richard Nixon; in the 1940s and 1950s the hotel was a hub of the island's gambling era. The ghost tour is led by the hotel concierge, known locally as the Ghostess, runs about 90 minutes year-round with extra dates around Halloween, requires a reservation and is nonrefundable. Its cast extends well beyond the bride, whom the stories name Audra and place in Room 501 and the west turret: Sister Katherine, a nun from St. Mary's Orphan Asylum, which stood nearby and lost 90 children and 10 sisters in the 1900 Storm, is said to watch the sea from the south lawn during storms; a little girl is reported near the spa, once the soda fountain; and the portrait of Bernardo de Gálvez, the hotel's namesake, is said to follow guests with its eyes.

Room craft: request an ocean-view room on a higher floor for the Gulf at sunrise, ask about the hotel ghost tour when you check in, and plan a sunset at the pool deck. Weekends book up in summer and around Galveston events, while autumn and spring bring gentler weather and calmer prices.

Practicals: 2024 Seawall Boulevard, Galveston; valet parking only; pets allowed with a fee; check-in age 21; about an hour from Houston. Fit: a beach-and-ghosts weekend, Galveston historic district walks and the island's own ghost tours.
